The BARC™ Debrief Framework
Crisis Response Dogs uses our own BARC Debrief Framework which is a structured, welfare-led model designed to support handlers and their dogs following every deployment.
Crisis response work can involve exposure to distress, trauma, and heightened emotional environments. The BARC Framework ensures that no deployment ends without staged reflection, emotional support, and welfare monitoring.
BARC reflects both our structured approach and the central role of the human-dog partnership.
What BARC stands for:
B - Breathe
Immediate Welfare Check (within 2 hours)
The first stage focuses on stabilisation.
We check:
-
The immediate emotional state of the handler
-
Physical wellbeing of handler and dog
-
Initial environmental concerns
-
Safe return home
This is a supportive grounding conversation, not a detailed review. The priority is calm, safety, and welfare.
A - Assess
Operational Review (within 24-72 hours)
This stage provides structured reflection on the practical aspects of deployment.
We review:
-
Communication with partner agencies
-
Clarity of roles and professional boundaries
-
Safeguarding considerations
-
What worked well
-
Any operational challenges
This ensures accountability, learning, and continuous improvement.
R - Reflect
Emotional Processing
Where appropriate, handlers are supported to reflect on the emotional impact of the deployment.
This may include:
-
Processing exposure to distress
-
Identifying signs of cumulative stress
-
Discussing coping strategies
-
Accessing confidential mental health support if needed
This stage reinforces that emotional wellbeing is a professional priority.
C - Continue
Follow-Up Check-In (2-4 weeks)
The final stage ensures ongoing monitoring and sustainability.
We consider:
-
Emotional wellbeing since deployment
-
Dog behaviour and stress indicators
-
Readiness for future deployments
-
The need for rest, pause, or additional support
No handler or dog is redeployed if wellbeing concerns are identified.
Why the BARC Framework Matters
The BARC Framework ensures that Crisis Response Dogs operates in a way that is:
-
Trauma-informed
-
Volunteer-centred
-
Welfare-led
-
Professionally accountable
-
Sustainable
By embedding structured debriefing into every deployment, we protect our volunteers, safeguard our dogs, and maintain the integrity of the service.
